Replacing the Rope
Should your rope break or need replacement, follow these instructions.
- Remove black spool cover by inserting the tip of a small screwdriver in the slot near the axle shaft and carefully pry outward. This will allow the cover to slide away from the axle shaft and be completely removed.
- Remove old rope from spool.
- Measure 9-1/2 feet or less of new 3/16" braided-nylon line (or 8 feet of 1/4" line).
IMPORTANT!
Under no circumstances should you install more than 9-1/2 feet of rope onto the Moormate®. This will cause the spring to overstretch and break!
|
- Tie a single stopper now approximately 8 inches from one end of the rope.
- Insert the tip of that same end of the rope through the hole in the plastic spool and under the metal retaining clip.
- While holding the spool and the Moormate® stationary, wrap the rope around the spool (Do not rotate the spool). It's awkward but important not to rotate the spool. When finished, the rope should end up in line with the hole in the metal deck plate.
- Give the rope and spool 1 complete forward rotation to provide a small amount of back pressure on the spring. Then feed the rope through the hole in the metal deck plate.
- Slide the black end-cap over the rope and tie a knot at the end of the rope which will fit back into the end-cap.
- Push the knot into the end-cap, close the cover and you are finished.
If there is not enough tension to fully retract the rope, remove the end-cap and wrap the rope one additional revolution around the spool.
IMPORTANT!
If there is too much tension on the rope when it is fully retracted, then the internal spring will be overwound when the rope is extended. This may cause it to break! Do not over-wind when installing a new rope.

Replacing the Spring
To replace the spring, the spool must be disassembled. This is accomplished as follows.
- Remove black spool cover as indicated above.
- Completely remove the rope from the spool.
- Using a small screwdriver or probe, remove the "c-clip" holding the axle in place as shown in the next illustration.
- Remove the axle and spool.
- Rotate the two halves of the spool to disassemble the spool.
CAUTION!
When you are removing the spring, be certain the spool is pointed away from you. The spring is coiled under pressure and will expand violently.
|
- Carefully remove the old coil spring.
- Very Important! Apply a layer of waterproof grease to the inside of the spool where the new spring will be placed. Without a good coating of grease, you will not be able to insert your new spring.
- Without removing the band around your new coil spring, carefully lay the spring in position with the end tab in the spool slot as shown below. As you are facing the open spool, be certain the outer tab on the spring faces left as shown.
- Turn the other half of the spool upside down and using its outer flat side to apply pressure, push the coil spring (with the band still around it) down into the spool. This should cause the band to partially slip off.
- Carefully remove the band surrounding the spring to allow the spring to slightly expand and fill the housing in the spool.
- With the tip of the screwdriver, carefully push the coil spring the rest of the way down the spool cavity. The spring must be positioned all the way down at the bottom of the spool cavity.
- Reconnect the two spool halves and rotate until the rope hole is in alignment.
- Replace the spool and insert the axle shaft so the end of the spring tip is located in the split of the axle shaft.
- Replace the "c-clip" on the axle.
- Replace the rope. Be certain to use the prior instructions for proper rope replacement.
